How do I know if my child needs speech and language therapy?

If you are concerned about your child's speech and language development or ability to communicate with others, a good place to start is with your child's teacher or a developmental paediatrician. They may be able to gauge your child's communication skills and developmental milestones based on what is typically observed at your child's age. Other professionals such as psychologists or occupational therapists may also refer a child for speech and language therapy.

How can I help my child?
The Island Therapy Collective team understands every parent's desire to help his/her child. We truly believe parents can empower their children and bring out the best in them.

Every child develops at a different pace. If you have any concerns, please feel free to contact us for an individualised assessment and intervention program.
 

Do I need a referral from my doctor or a specialist?
No, a diagnosis or referral letter is not necessary to access our services.


Are your services covered by insurance?
We do not perform direct billing with insurance companies, but we will fill in insurance forms as part of our mission to advocate for your child's needs. Please discuss coverage for speech therapy sessions directly with your insurance provider.


What can I expect at the initial consultation?
The Island Therapy Collective provides assessment and therapy that is tailored to the unique needs of each student. Depending on the type and severity of difficulties, our therapy sessions are usually held 1-3 times per week. The scope and duration of therapy will also be discussed with your experienced Speech and Language Therapist during the initial consultation.
 
 
Can parents attend the sessions too?
Yes, you are invited to attend therapy sessions with your child. We believe in empowering and collaborating with parents. By bringing our service to your home or your child's school, we aim to share our knowledge and discuss the intervention goals that can help to address your child's needs. We can also show parents and teachers how they can support the student in practising these skills outside of therapy, within their homes and schools.
